Fake CID officer caught extorting money from grieving families in West Medinipur

A man impersonating a CID officer was caught in West Bengal’s West Medinipur district, under the Dantan police station area. The accused, identified as Abhijit Mahapatra, was operating in Sadrang village, where he allegedly demanded money from families of the deceased under the pretext of solving their cases.

Police said Mahapatra demanded ₹40,000 from one family and insisted they pay at least ₹10,000. Villagers grew suspicious and questioned him. When he failed to produce proper identification or satisfactory answers, locals detained him and called the police, who arrested him on the spot.

The accused is currently in police custody. Officers have begun an investigation to determine whether more individuals are linked to the case and how many families were approached. Efforts are underway to verify the extent of the impersonation and any previous incidents.
